Ten Reasons why cybersecurity is more important than ever before.

  1. Increasing number of cyber-attacks on organizations and individuals. According to Security Magazine, there are over 2,200 attacks each day which translates to nearly 1 cyberattack every 39 seconds.

  2. There are now a larger number of cybersecurity threats due to the proliferation of cloud services, smartphones, smart devices (Internet of Things (IoT)).

  3. Sensitive data is being digitized at a rapid rate without adequate security controls in place. As per statistics from Surfshark, the United States experiences the most data breaches of any country. In 2021, 212.4 million users were affected (compared to 174.4 million in 2020). 90% of all data breaches are linked to phishing attacks suggesting a need for increased data security. (Cisco)

  4. Ecommerce related threats are growing by the day. Among the various industry sectors e-commerce is highly vulnerable and is experiencing 32.4% attacks in various forms.

  5. Hackers are getting more organized and are constantly adding to the repertoire of hacking methods.  As per DataProt, 560,000 new pieces of malware are discovered every day.

  6. The Human Factor is the leading cause of cybersecurity breaches. A 2021 IBM Cyber Security Intelligence Index Report found that human errors are responsible for 95% of these breaches.

  7. Cyber-attacks are all pervasive and affect all types of organizations and individuals across all sectors and geographies. Motivations of cybercriminals range from financial gain to cyberespionage to political motivation.

  8. Cyber-attacks can cause great reputational harm. Impacts include financial losses, reputational damage, business disruption, loss of customer trust and legal liabilities.

  9. Cybercrime is big business. Forecasts show businesses will lose approximately $10.5 trillion in 2025 at an estimated $19,977,168 per minute due to cybercrime. (Cybercrime Magazine). Over the next 5 years, global cybercrime costs are predicted to grow by 23% per year, reaching $23.84 trillion annually by 2027. (Statista)

  10. Cybersecurity is a survival skill in the digital age. Lack of cybersecurity awareness and professional skills is a major barrier in dealing with cyber threats. There will be nearly 3.5 million open cybersecurity jobs waiting to be filled in 2023. (Cybersecurity Ventures).

Cybersecurity helps to protect organizations and individuals from cyber-attacks.

My Journey in Cybersecurity

From Practitioner to Educator to Award Winning Author:

My path in cybersecurity has been a fascinating evolution, spanning various roles and experiences. Starting as a practitioner, I transitioned to a student, then a researcher, and eventually found myself teaching essential concepts of cyber risk management to management students.

As a CEO of an award-winning payment systems company for over a decade, I navigated risk scenarios and corporate governance issues related to information technology deployment. This firsthand experience provided valuable insights into the intrinsic connection between IT solutions and cybersecurity. Leading the development of IT products across diverse industry verticals—such as banking, telecom, corporate, and government—expanded my understanding of industry-specific requirements, user behaviour, system performance, and compliance.

My educational journey includes a master’s degree from Sheffield-Hallam University (UK), a PG Diploma in Computer Systems, specialized courses in Cybersecurity from Harvard University, as well as Cyber Law and Cyber Forensics from the National Law School of India University. I am a certified corporate director and Fellow of The Institute of Directors.

Empowering Cybersecurity Knowledge: From Research to Authorship

My journey through the realms of Cyber Risk Management, Cyber Law, Cyber Forensics, Data Protection, and Cybersecurity has been a rich tapestry of experiences and learning. These insights have found expression in the numerous articles and books I have authored on cybersecurity and cyber risk management.

The current cyber threat landscape is more formidable than ever, affecting both individuals and organizations. I am deeply committed to raising awareness and enhancing knowledge in the field. My audience spans business managers, professionals, leaders, owners, board members, and students. In today’s digital landscape, it is imperative for the workforce to be well-versed in cybersecurity methods and processes to navigate risks securely.

My books have received National and International acclaim:

To further this mission, I have contributed several articles to newspapers and online publications. Additionally, I have authored the following books two of which have received awards. My books have been sold in over one hundred countries and form a part of course curriculum and library collections around the world.
